Descript Review 2026: Pricing, Plans and Who It Fits
Our Descript review for 2026, in short: Descript is a video and podcast editor built around editing a transcript, with AI tools for clean-up, speech, avatars and dubbing layered on top. It has a free plan and three paid plans priced per person: Hobbyist at $16 a month on yearly billing ($24 monthly), Creator at $24 ($35) and Business at $50 ($65). Each plan sets limits on media hours and AI credits. It suits people who edit spoken content regularly; the usage meters make the real monthly cost harder to predict, and its Trustpilot score (2.6) is far below G2 and Capterra (4.6).

What Descript does
Descript began as a podcast editor and now describes itself as an AI-powered video and audio editor. Its central idea, listed on its Enterprise column as "Text-based editing: Edit video by editing a doc", is that your recording is transcribed and you cut, rearrange and fix it by editing the text. Based on the pricing page, here is what the product includes:
- Transcription: automatic transcription in 25 languages on every plan, with speaker detection and multitrack transcription listed in the comparison table.
- Underlord: Descript's AI co-editor, which the page describes as making polished edits and helping create videos from a prompt. It is marked "Limited" on the Free plan and full on paid plans.
- Clean-up tools: Studio Sound, Remove Filler Words, Shorten Word Gaps, Edit for Clarity, Remove Retakes, Eye Contact, Green Screen and Automatic Multicam.
- Repurposing: Create Clips, add chapters, and drafting of social posts, show notes and summaries.
- AI speech and avatars: text-to-speech with stock AI speakers, custom voice clones, an avatar gallery of 35+ avatars, and custom avatars from a photo upload on Business. If a stand-alone voice clone is the main job, compare ElevenLabs voice cloning plans or our full ElevenLabs review.
- Translation: caption translation in 61 languages and audio dubbing in 30 languages, with translation proofreading on Business. For dedicated dubbing and lip-sync tools, see our ElevenLabs vs HeyGen vs Rask AI dubbing comparison.
- Recording and collaboration: remote recording rooms for up to 10 participants, screen recording, Brand Studio for shared templates, and an API plus MCP connection listed in the site navigation.
Descript says more than 6 million creators and teams use it, which is the vendor's own figure and one we have not verified. The practical point for a buyer is that pricing is built from three meters: seats, media hours and AI credits. We have not tested any of it, so what follows describes plans, not editing quality.

Source: descript.com/pricing, captured October 13, 2026. Prices checked October 13, 2026. Prices in USD. The page says yearly billing saves "up to 35%" over monthly; the page's own data fields label $16, $24 and $50 as the annual amounts. Quoted wording is from the page.
Reading the numbers: the page shows two figures per plan under a Monthly/Annual toggle and does not print "billed annually" next to the lower one. We read the lower figure as the annual-billing price because the page's checkout links use a yearly interval and its data labels those amounts as annual. Confirm at checkout. Comparing the columns, yearly billing is a 33% cut on Hobbyist, 31% on Creator and 23% on Business, so the "up to 35%" headline is not what every plan gets.
Seats and storage: the price is per person. Creator and Business both say extra people are "billed separately", so the cost of a team depends on how Descript bills each added seat. The page does not give an amount, so ask before you budget for three or five people. Cloud storage is 5 GB on Free, 100 GB on Hobbyist, 1 TB on Creator and 2 TB on Business.
What we could not confirm: whether the Free plan's 100 AI credits is truly a one-off (the table says "100 (one-time)") and what happens to unused credits on paid plans; the price of top-ups, which the page mentions without an amount; how many credits a given Underlord task or minute of generated video uses; and whether the page applies any student or nonprofit discount automatically (the FAQ says a form is available). The Free-plan watermark is not stated in words; we read it from the comparison table, where watermark-free export is a paid-plan row.
What users say: ratings on review sites
| Review site | Rating | Reviews | Link |
|---|---|---|---|
| G2 | 4.6 / 5 | 927 | G2 |
| Capterra | 4.6 / 5 | 183 | Capterra |
| Trustpilot | 2.6 / 5 | 290 | Trustpilot |
Source: the three review-site pages linked above, read on October 13, 2026. G2 blocks scripted fetches, so spot-check that figure in a browser. Counts change daily.
G2 and Capterra agree at 4.6 on large counts, while Trustpilot shows 2.6 from 290 reviews. We have not analyzed the review text. Trustpilot's own auto-generated summary of 97 recent reviews says most reviewers were unhappy and mentions AI tools using up subscription credits quickly and desktop app bugs; that is Trustpilot's summary of its reviewers, not our finding, and we have not verified either point. Because credit usage is the main cost uncertainty in the plan structure, it is worth testing on the Free plan before you pay.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Text-based editing lets you cut a recording by editing its transcript, with transcription in 25 languages on every plan.
- A free plan with no credit card, so you can try the editor before paying.
- One product covers editing, recording, clean-up tools, AI speech, avatars, captions and dubbing.
- Paid plans are watermark-free, with 1080p on Hobbyist and 4K on Creator and Business.
- G2 shows 4.6 out of 5 from 927 reviews and Capterra 4.6 from 183.
Cons
- Pricing has three meters (seats, media hours and AI credits), so real cost depends on usage you cannot see in advance.
- Trustpilot shows 2.6 out of 5 from 290 reviews, far below G2 and Capterra.
- Price is per person, and teams of 3 or 5 are billed per seat on Creator and Business.
- Top-up prices and per-task credit costs are not shown on the pricing page.
- The free plan is limited: 1 media hour a month, one-time AI credits, 720p export.
- The monthly and yearly figures are not labeled in plain words on the page.
Who should buy it, and who shouldn't
Good fit: podcasters, YouTubers, course creators and marketing teams that record talking-head, interview or screen-recording content and want to edit by transcript. Hobbyist suits a solo creator who needs watermark-free 1080p; Creator suits one to three people who need 4K, more hours and unlimited stock media; Business suits small teams that need dubbing, custom avatars and brand controls.
Skip it if: your work is mostly motion graphics, heavy color grading or complex multi-layer timelines, because the product's pitch is transcript-based editing and we have not tested it for those jobs; you want one flat monthly price with no usage meters; you want to produce large volumes of AI-generated video, where credits may run out; or you need a text-to-video tool that builds a video from a blog post, which is closer to what our Pictory review covers.
Questions to answer before paying: how many hours of raw recording you will import each month (compare with 10, 30 or 40); which AI features you will use daily, and how fast 100 free credits go when you try them; how many people will edit; and whether you need dubbing or custom avatars, which are listed on Business.
Alternatives
Descript is an editor first, so it sits next to both content tools and other media tools. If you start from written content, our Pictory review covers a tool that turns scripts and articles into video, and our Murf AI review covers a dedicated voiceover studio. Verdict
Descript in 2026 is a transcript-driven audio and video editor with a free tier and three paid plans at $16, $24 and $50 per person a month on yearly billing ($24, $35 and $65 monthly). The editing idea is well established and review scores on G2 (4.6 from 927) and Capterra (4.6 from 183) are strong. The complications are the three-meter pricing, with seats, media hours and AI credits, and a Trustpilot score of 2.6 that points to frustration somewhere among its users. If you edit spoken content regularly, start on the Free plan, push your own recording through it, and watch how quickly the AI credits drop before choosing Hobbyist or Creator. If you need a predictable monthly cost for high-volume AI generation, ask Descript about top-up pricing first.
