How we test, source, and disclose. Last updated April 2026.

Independence

Advertisers and affiliate partners do not see coverage before publication, cannot request changes, and cannot pay for better rankings. Our category winners reflect our test results, not commission rates. When we recommend a product that happens to have a better affiliate commission than its competitor, the coincidence isn't the reason — and we'll say so explicitly if there's any ambiguity.

Testing methodology

For every tool review we publish:

  1. We subscribe to the tool at the tier most of our readers would use (typically Pro or the paid starter tier). For tools with a sufficient free tier, we note that we tested the free tier.
  2. We run a standardized battery of tasks specific to the tool's category: e.g. 10 long-form prompts for writing tools, 15 image prompts across styles for image generators, or a set of realistic coding tasks for coding assistants.
  3. We compare outputs on the same prompts against at least two direct competitors.
  4. We document specific failure modes, limits, and quirks — not just strengths.
  5. Editor review for accuracy and reproducibility before publish.

Sourcing

Pricing, feature, and limit claims are sourced from the vendor's official pricing page as of the article's last-updated date. Benchmark claims are sourced from the benchmark's original paper or the vendor's published results, cited inline. We do not reproduce vendor marketing copy as our editorial.

Affiliate disclosure

When an article contains affiliate links, we show: "We earn a commission when you sign up through our links. This doesn't change your price and doesn't affect our rankings." This appears at the top of the article. Full policy: Affiliate Disclaimer.

Updates & freshness

AI tools change pricing and features frequently. We revisit our reviews at least quarterly and update them whenever a vendor materially changes the product. The "Last updated" date at the top of each article is the most recent review date.

Corrections

When we get something wrong, we fix it in-place and add a corrections note at the bottom. Load-bearing errors get an update at the top. Email corrections@smartaitoolsreview.com.

AI use

We use AI tools — including ones we review — in our own workflow. Every article is reviewed by a human editor responsible for accuracy and final sign-off. Screenshots or outputs in a review that were generated by the reviewed tool are labeled as such. We do not fabricate benchmarks, quotes, or statistics.

What we won't do

  • Take payment for favorable coverage.
  • Accept gifts from vendors in exchange for reviews.
  • Rank products by commission size rather than test results.
  • Publish "pay-for-placement" round-ups disguised as editorial.
  • Hide affiliate relationships.
